MOVEit Transfer 2024.1 was released on 20th November 2024, bringing new features, and improvements. This article provides an overview of the updates included in this latest release. The update is available as a free upgrade for all customers with an active service agreement, accessible through the Progress Community.
We asked our Technical Consultant, Sean Holdstock to take a look into the release for MOVEit Managed File Transfer and highlight the updates he believe will make the most significant impact for our customers.
1. Admin Console is Now Retired
It’s time to say goodbye to an old friend. In MOVEit 2024 and 2024.1, Progress has officially retired the desktop administration application, and it will no longer be available to use. Upon upgrading either Transfer or Automation, the desktop administration will be removed as part of the upgrade process. All administration will now need to be done via the web admin console. However, the good news is that the web admin console already has a wider range of features than the old desktop console.
For Automation users, we would recommend locking down the admin interface from external exposure to reduce your attack surface.
We’ve previously addressed this change, but if you missed it, we encourage you to check out one of our recent blogs where we address the eight most common questions from customers transitioning from the desktop admin console to the web admin console.
2. Retirement of Legacy SSH Service
Along with the retirement of the desktop console, Progress have updated us about the future retirement of the “WeOnlyDo” SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) library - which will be removed during the upgrade of Automation. The legacy Secure Shell (SSH) service is being retired in MOVEit Transfer within a future release of version 2025.
If you are using this feature, it would be advisable to discuss with your 3rd party users who require older SSH ciphers that they will need to use modern ciphers going forward to connect. If you believe this change will impact you and your business, our Pro2col Technical Experts are able to assist with change planning and upgrades through our Professional Services offering.
3. Important Changes to IP Lockout Policy
Now, it’s not all doom and gloom - there are some interesting new features as of version 2024. For MOVEit Transfer, we see an improved IP lockout policy, which now allows administrators to unlock all IP addresses if required.
4. Single Sign-On (SSO) with SAML
Additionally, Progress have added the inclusion of forced single sign-on (SSO) with Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML). This will allow administrators to force users to authenticate with SSO, instead of choosing to use MOVEit authentication or SSO.
5. New In-App Notifications
On the MOVEit Automation front, Progress are introducing new in-app notifications that will keep you updated on product releases, update availability and explanations of new features directly from the web admin. Customers will also have access to the in-app MOVEit Resource Centre, where you can find information on product release notes, knowledge base information, and the community site.
6. Kill Task Function
For MOVEit Automation users, Progress have added a kill task function to allow administrators to kill tasks that hang or fail to respond to the “Stop running task” command.
